What Exactly are Anti-wrinkle Injections (“Botox”)?

Botox is a brand name for one of many different brands used to iron out wrinkles. I prefer to use Bocouture and Azzalure (higher strength) for my treatments, but I will refer to it as Botox here for ease of reference. The treatment works by paralysing the muscles, preventing them from moving constantly and creating those little ridges that are created, when we lose collagen and elastin in the skin, due to ageing. Those little ridges are our wrinkles!

Many of you told me that you had, from treatments in the past, experienced a 5 minute in/out treatment, only one needle was used and you either had a really heavy feeling in your forehead, heavy eyelids or the dreaded ‘Spock’ eyebrow look!!!

What happens during an appointment with Paula?

When booking with me, on average you will have a 30-minute appointment where:

• Your facial movements will be studied and discussed - if some small movement preferred or a more ‘frozen’ look, for example.

• Your face will be mapped out, and tiny dots of colour are placed on your skin to mark the areas of movement.

• Different units of Botox will be applied depending on muscle movement; for example, the ‘11’ between the ‘brows is typically a very strong muscle, so more units will be applied in the areas needed.

• Typically between 5-7 different needles will be used, ensuring minimal bruising. Botox is not particularly painful either, but using more needles helps because the needles are not blunted.

• You’ll have Arnica gel applied to the area and receive full aftercare information.

You are offered a free Review after two weeks, to see if you need just a little more in some areas, which is completely down to personal taste. I do find those who “definitely don’t want that frozen look” come back and want a little more “to stop any movement” - so, a frozen look!!! (This, of course, is entirely your decision).

Results will start to appear in 3/4 days and gradually increase over two weeks in total. When done well, Botox is a fantastic procedure, giving youthful looks that aren’t obvious.

The most common compliment is “You look really well, have you been on holiday?”
